On the ¥á-Glycerophosphate Dehydrogenase from Human term Placenta

Abstract
Human term placenta was fractionatted by differential centrifugation into cytoplasmic and mitochondrial fraction. The activity of cytoplasmic ¥á-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (G3P oxidoreductase (EC 1.1.1.94 : G3P : NAD 2-oxidoreductase)) was assayed according to the method of Gonzalez-Cerezo and the activity of mitochondrial ¥á-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (G3P dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.99.5 : G3P : cytochrome oxidoreductase)) was determined by the procedure of Dawson and Thorne. Unusually high rate of ¥á-glycerophosphate oxidation was found both in cytoplasm and in mitochondria. Despite the disparity of results by some authors, the present finding strongly suggests that the ¥á-glycerophosphate shuttle system operates actively in human term placenta.
